Tor. My father’s best friend.

Fifteen years older than me, he’s always been my protector. The one I should never, ever want.

But I was born to be his.

She’s always loved me.

She’s shattered me.

She’s healed me.

Kenzi. My best friend’s daughter.

I held her the day she was born, and I never let go.

She’s forbidden to me. But she’s the only one that really gets me.

We’re slowly being torn apart by everything we love.

Everything we want.

Prologue

Kenzi one day old

Toren fifteen years old

“We want you to be her Godfather,” Asher says as he gently lays his newborn baby into my arms. I have to tear my gaze away from her spellbinding eyes to look up at him from the chair I’m cradling the baby in.

“Me?” I repeat, glancing over at Ember in the hospital bed, who beams back at me with a tired, yet genuine smile.

“Yes, you,” they both say at the same time. “If it wasn’t for you, we probably never would have met,” Ember adds, grabbing Asher’s hand. “And we wouldn’t have this beautiful little baby. We know you’ll always protect her.”

“That’s right, man. You’re Uncle Tor now.”

I’m an uncle. And my two best friends are parents. And we’re all fuckin’ under sixteen.

But Kenzi Allyster Valentine would change us all forever. She needed us.

“Wow. I’m honored, guys. No doubt, I’ll always be here for her.”

I kick back the pang that hits my stomach. I didn’t get the girl…but I got something better that I never expected. A gift in the form of a little tiny hand wrapped tightly around my finger, huge eyes like gems staring up into mine like I was the most amazing person in the friggen’ world, and the first glimpse of what I could already tell was going to be a heart-stopping smile.

At that moment, a connection was born.

That was it.

She owned me.

My niece.

My god-daughter.

The love of my life.

MY REVIEW

Kerry Wilkinson has created a creepy but riveting new novel with "The Killer Inside." It's a psychological thriller that keeps readers turning the page wanting more. This story is infused with humor, originality, and mystery. I just can't recommend it enough.

This police procedural starts off very quickly and maintains a fast pace throughout, definitely a fast-paced thriller.  As more murders occur, the newly appointed detective DS Daniel and the journalist, Garry, work together looking for connections, trying to unmask the killer.  Wilkinson writes so the readers can FEEL the building tension that leads naturally to the explosive ending!

This was such a quick read but we do get some background details on DS Daniel to build on her character and help the reader understand who she is as a person and a detective. There are subplots involving her retired ex-partner and her flat mate/best friend, which are important and add to the plot. I’m definitely excited to see that NetGalley has the second novel queued up. I’m hoping this turns into a great series similar to MJ Arlidge’s DI Helen Grace.

Kerry Wilkinson give us an exciting, fast paced, thriller/crime thriller with an engaging new DS to follow.  This is one I would definitely recommend!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this great book!!

“I wondered if you’d be here.”
His voice sounded like silk, but it made her heart skip a beat. She spun to face him, her mouth hanging open.
“I—what are you doing here?”
“I came to see you, obviously.”
She raised an eyebrow, trying to keep cool.
“I figured it would be a safe bet to check the same bar again. I mean, you are on the event card, aren’t you?”
Her eyes widened. Of course flyers were all over the place promoting their show tonight, but she hadn’t expected him to actually notice that. She took a deep breath and smirked.
“Funny, I thought you were on an event card tonight, too.”
He laughed. “I am. I just told my friends I might be a little late. Of course, I’ll still get there before I have to be on stage. I wouldn’t make my fans wait.”
“That’s kind of you.” Anna looked him over for a fraction of a second, then held her hand out to him. “Anna.”
“Adam.”
They shook hands as his eyes roamed over her body.
“I guess you knew that though, didn’t you?”
“Nope. I had no clue what your name was.” And she hadn’t. She wasn’t a fan of the kind of music he played, at least she was guessing she wasn’t considering she’d never heard one of his songs before. As far as you know, she thought.
Adam’s smile widened. “You didn’t?”
“Nope. I saw a poster for you yesterday, that’s the only reason I recognized you.”
He let out a soft laugh. “Well, I’ll be damned.” His smile widened as James brought Anna’s drink over.
“Thanks.” She gave him a quick smile.
“Bell.” Despite the fact he used his nickname for her, Jesse didn’t sound happy. Anna’s body tensed as she turned to him. “I’ve got some bad news.”
Her eyes widened as she saw the look on his face. “What is it?”
“Mike won’t be able to make it.”
“What?” Anna snapped.
“He’s sick. He’s been puking all day. We didn’t want to say anything until we were sure he wouldn’t be able to make it, but he just went and doped himself up on cold medication.”
Anna groaned. What were they going to do? “Great,” she muttered. They’d have to cancel it. There was no other option for them. Anna ran her fingers through her hair. I’ve got to find someone who can replace him. Maybe someone I know…. No, she’d know if there was someone. Anyways, they’d have to learn all the songs for the set list.
It just wouldn’t work.
Anna blew out a deep breath. She could feel the stress inching to every part of her body, her muscles tensing.
“Who’s Mike?”
She’d totally forgotten that Adam was there. She took a deep breath, trying not to sound too disappointed. “He’s our bassist. And if he’s sick then there is no way we can play tonight.”
“You know...” Adam grinned widely. “I do happen to play bass.”
Jesse stared at him with wide eyes. “You do? Well, could you—”
“No,” Anna cut him off. “He can’t. He’s playing with his own band tonight. Hooch in Hades, was it?”
“Oh, I’ve heard of them.” Jesse mulled it over. “Donna’s kid is a big fan of them.”
“What time are you playing?”
“Nine,” Jesse answered before Anna could.
Adam bit his lip, a movement that sent a shiver down Anna’s spine.
“And you’re on for an hour?”
“Yes.”
“I’d need a ride right to the venue, but I could probably do it.”

OUT OF REACH

Andy and I had been best friends since we were eight-years old.
Watching him slowly fade away, ever closer to his final breath, made
me so incredibly angry. I knew there was nothing I could do to change
it--I had given in to despair, but Andy had not. He had one last hand
to play.

He wasn't going to simply sit back and wait for Death to claim
him--not Andy. He was going to live life until he couldn't hold his
eyes open any longer.

Andy didn't want to die in some sterile hospital and asked me to take
him and Emily to the beach. It would be our last road trip together.

Emily. Emily was a problem for me.

I harbored a secret that would have torn our friendship apart. I was
in love with Andy's girl, and had been since she'd walked into our
sixth grade class, so many years ago.

So what kind of person am I? My best friend is dying, and it's
awful--but my heart still aches for his girl. I hate myself for
thinking beyond Andy's death and whether there could ever be a future for Emily and I, but I can't help it.

I'm in love with her.

ALWAYS YOU

I was thrilled when I was offered a graduate teaching position at the
prestigious Tennerson Girls Academy. At twenty-three, this would be my first ‘real’ teaching assignment. Working at the elite boarding
school, home to the daughters of some of the wealthiest people in the
world, was a great opportunity that I would’ve been stupid to pass up.

One week into my new job, and I suddenly had no idea why I chose high school…I was a seventeen year old boy once, I knew how teenage girls behaved.

You can’t even imagine the hell of trying to teach thirty, hormonal
driven seventeen year olds who have been cooped up, away from any male contact.

I could handle the whispers every time I entered the room. I could
even handle the obvious attempts at gaining my attention. What I
couldn’t handle was her…

Rich bitches and way too many rules. Was it any wonder that I hated school?

Add to that the lack of male contact, and I was going insane. Like
literally. I wasn’t used to this. A year ago I was normal. I had a
boyfriend, friends and a loving family. There is nothing normal about
me anymore, and nobody here lets me forget that.

My name is Wrenn, and I’m only here because my aunt took me in after what happened, but my aunt also happens to be the headmistress of this academy…Can you see my problem?

I’m hated for my lack of money, and I’m hated for who my Aunt is.

Then he arrived. Dalton Reed. My new history teacher.

Slowly, he helped me see that even in the worst situations, there is
always hope.

WORDS LEFT UNSAID

At 8:28 I was the girl who had everything.

At 8:29 my whole world fell apart.

A split second can change your life. I learned this the hard way. I
wasn't ready to let him go. Even when the terms "vegetative state" and
"will never recover" were thrown around I held onto hope. I mean,
miracles happen, right?

We deserved our happy ending.

Three years later and I'm still hoping. In my heart I know I have to
let him go but how can I? He's the only man I've ever loved. He"s my
soul mate. My life.

Then I meet Max. He's everything Aiden isn't and as much as I'm trying to fight my feelings, I'm losing. I don't want to fight anymore.

I need to live my life.

I need to move on.

But in order to move forward I need to let go of the past.
