RELEASE DAY: The Other Girl by Erica Spindler

THE OTHER GIRL
BY ERICA SPINDLER

A horrific crime. One witness—a fifteen year old girl from the wrong side of the tracks, one known for lying and her own brushes with the law.
Is it any surprise no one believed her?

Officer Miranda Rader of the Harmony, Louisiana PD is known for her honesty, integrity, and steady hand in a crisis—but that wasn’t always so. Miranda comes from the town of Jasper, a place about the size of a good spit on a hot day, and her side of the tracks was the wrong one. She’s worked hard to earn the respect of her coworkers and the community.

When Miranda and her partner are called to investigate the murder of one of the town’s most beloved college professors, they’re unprepared for the brutality of the scene. This murder is unlike any they’ve ever investigated, and just when Miranda thinks she’s seen the worst of it, she finds a piece of evidence that chills her to the core: a faded newspaper clipping about that terrible night fifteen years ago.

The night she’d buried, along with her past and the girl she’d been back then. Until now that grave had stayed sealed . . . except for those times, in the deepest part of the night, when the nightmares came, of a crime no one believed happened and the screams of the girl they believed didn’t exist.
Another man turns up dead, this one a retired cop. Not just any cop—the one who took her statement that night. Two murders, two very different men, two killings that on the surface had nothing in common—except Miranda.

More evidence emerges, and Miranda finds herself under the microscope, her honesty and integrity doubted, her motivations questioned. Alone, the way she’d been all those years ago, Miranda realizes she must face her past to find the truth—before it’s too late. For her . . . and the other girl.

A New York Times and International bestselling author, Erica Spindler's skill for crafting engrossing plots and compelling characters has earned both critical praise and legions of fans. SUSPENSE – ERICA’S TRUE CALLING

Raised in Rockford, Illinois, Erica had planned on being an artist, earning a BFA from Delta State University and an MFA from the University of New Orleans in the visual arts. In June of 1982, in bed with a cold, she picked up a romance novel for relief from daytime television. She was immediately hooked, and soon decided to try to write one herself. She leaped from romance to suspense in 1996 with her novel Forbidden Fruit, and found her true calling.

Her novel Bone Cold won the prestigious Daphne du Maurier Award for excellence. A Romance Writers of America Honor Roll member, she received a Kiss of Death Award for her novels Forbidden Fruit and Dead Run and was a three-time RITA® Award finalist.  Publishers Weekly awarded the audio version of her novel Shocking Pink a Listen Up Award, naming it one of the best audio mystery books of 1998.

Erica lives just outside New Orleans, Louisiana, with her husband and two sons and is busy at work on her next thriller.

This was my first Erica Spindler book, and what an introduction it was! I was pulled in by this story and flew through it in about 2 days! I’ve glanced at the other Erica Spindler books and it seems she has a large following and is pretty consistently rated at least 4 Stars. That’s important to me! I’ve added Erica Spindler to my TBR books… when I get some down time (haha) I’ll be sure to revisit some of her previous stories.

The Other Girl starts of extremely strong. A popular English professor is found murdered with some evidence left behind to make some people think he wasn’t well liked for his manly ways! Miranda, the lead detective, is an interesting character. She’s smart but lacking a bit since I stayed step-by-step with her. So why is this professor who is liked by all, killed in such a way? Let’s not leave out the fact that daddy is a prominent and wealthy man in the area… he’s also playing the Captain like a puppet. That drove me insane, I like good strong characters and the captain made me want to smack him around!

This was such a gripping read… you’ll feel like you’re on this roller coaster ride that shoots from the past and whirls into the present. Yeah, I was able to guess who the killer was fairly early, I am a lover of thrillers after all, I found the story to still keep me enthralled, interested. I really like the short snippets of the past tossed in… just when we’re getting elbow deep into the story Spidler will take us back to the past and leave us wondering.

I found The Other Girl to be very well plotted and an extremely entertaining read. There were points within this book that I was rushing through the pages wondering what was going to happen next. I’ll give you some of it being pretty obvious, and some other being fairly funny, but it still had some good twists and some good character development. The characters were well developed with a realistic dialogue. I could really relate to Miranda and her back and forth with her partner Jake. Nothing is a secret in a small town! I found that I wanted to know more about Miranda and Jake.

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

MY REVIEW
I have read every single one of Mitchell’s books thus far. I was so sad to hear that DC Knight wouldn’t be coming back to us with another story but so happy that wasn’t the end of Mitchell’s writing! Love You to Death does not have the paranormal aspects that her other books had but this is still an amazing book/story!!!

Can you imagine….doing what you think it right and the best for a child, your child, and later that child comes looking for you with a twisted happily ever after dream?! That’s what this book essentially is about. There’s a lot going on in this book and we get introduced to a lot. I can’t wait for book two. I want more Ruby and Nathan!! I get excited for Mitchell’s books for a lot of reasons but her ability to make characters come alive is a gift, not just her main characters either, I want more of Eve, Worrow, Downes, and Cathy! You can tell everyone has some secrets behind their doors!

I pride myself on being able to pick out the murderer pretty quickly in books, but this book, I was never sure. I thought I knew who it was but it was only who Mitchell wanted me to think it was. This storyline is just superb!! I can tell you, you will NOT know the ending until you get there!! It’s a shocker!

I really like when I get to know the people behind the story. Ruby sounds like she’s going to have a super interesting story and I like her love triangle. Both her options at love seem to be good choices, but of course, she wants the one that’s a bit more difficult. Life can never be easy, especially in a thriller! I was through this book in 3 days! I just gobbled it up.

Thanks NetGalley, Bookouture, and Caroline Mitchell for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

MY REVIEW:
I loved this book! Robert Bryndza has quickly become on of my favorite authors. With this book and The Girl in the Ice, he has quickly shown his thriller talent! I think I actually enjoyed this book more than The Girl in the Ice and that is saying something because I just gobbled up that book!

Erika Foster is a great detective to read about. She’s all instinct and ambition and unfortunately that doesn’t work well for her when she wants to climb the promotion ladder. This book was extremely personal for her. I think that’s what I enjoyed more…there was just so much suspense! I’m hoping these books still continue to come out as this one could really go either way.

I would like to thank Net Galley, Bookouture and Robert Bryndza for gifting me an advanced copy of The Night Stalker in exchange for a honest review.

BLURB
Jade
Jade’s young life was tough. After her mother died during childbirth and her father could no longer look after her, she was placed in foster care where she stayed for the next ten years. She grew up feeling unloved and unwanted as she was passed around from one screwed up home to the next.
Things began to look up for her when she was adopted by a wealthy socialite at the age of eleven. Sometimes though, things aren’t always what they seem. Jade didn’t know it at the time, but her new adoptive mother had big plans for her, and spent the next seven years grooming Jade for that role.
Jade learnt early in life that she couldn’t rely on anyone but herself. Instead of letting her circumstances beat her, she took all the negatives she’d been dealt, and used them to her advantage. She grew up to be a strong, successful, determined and independent woman. She was a loner by choice.
The only thing lacking in her life was companionship and love. She’d never experienced it, so she didn’t know what she was missing, until she had a one-night-stand with a handsome stranger. One night, that would change everything.
 Brock
Brock grew up privileged. He had everything going for him. Money, looks, charm, success and an endless array of beautiful women. He wasn’t interested in commitment. To him women were easy. They practically threw themselves at his feet. All they wanted was to do something nobody had ever managed before. Snare the hot, rich bachelor.
Then he met Jade. She was like a breath of fresh air. A challenge. Nothing like the women he was used too. Their one night together ignited something within him. A burning desire to own her, possess her, but Jade had other plans. Nobody says no to Brock Weston, nobody.
He’s left wondering about a woman he knows he can never have. But, when fate brings them together again, will he get what he wants? Will he be able to claim the unattainable? Or will her secrets crush him, and destroy any chance they have of being together?

EXCERPT:
After tightening the ribbon, I admire my ensemble in the mirror. It looks gorgeous.
‘Jade,’ I hear Brock call softly, after knocking on the cubicle door.
‘Yes.’
‘Can I see now?’
The hopefulness in his voice brings a smile to my face again. Without replying, I unlock and open the door slightly. He pops his head in and the look on his face does something to me. I’m so lost in it, I don’t even realise when he pushes the door open further, worming his way inside and turning the latch to relock it.
‘What are you doing?’ I whisper.
‘Sweet Jesus,’ is all he says as his arms wrap around my waist, drawing my body towards his. ‘You look incredible. We’re definitely buying this.’
‘You like?’ I ask as he gropes at my arse.
‘I fucking love. Turn around.’
I do as he asks.
‘Christ,’ he groans as his fingers skim up the outside of my legs until they’re resting on my hips. In the reflection, I see his eyes planted firmly on my behind. He takes a step forward, rubbing his body against mine. When his gaze meets mine in the mirror there’s pure desire in his eyes. Nobody has ever looked at me the way he does. Nobody.
His hands encircle my waist as he draws me closer, pressing into my back. ‘What are you doing to me?’ he murmurs as his lips graze over my shoulder. I have no idea, but I’m pretty sure it’s the same thing he’s doing to me.

I moan softly, resting my head against his chest while his mouth trails a path up my neck. One of his hands palm my breast through the corset, and the other moves down between my legs. I’m so lost in his touch that I totally forget we’re still in the dressing room at the lingerie store.
I’m pulled back into reality when I hear the tearing of fabric. ‘Brock,’ I say, when my eyes fly open to see him shoving the now ruined panties I was just wearing into his pocket. ‘I haven’t even paid for them yet.’

‘Shhh,’ he whispers in my ear as the hand on my breast moves up to cover my mouth. ‘I’m going to fuck you now. I can’t wait another second.’ My eyes widen at his comment. Has he lost his mind? We can’t have sex in here. I see his other hand in the reflection of the mirror disappear behind me and the distinct sound of a zipper rings out in the silence that has now fallen over us.
My stance widens automatically. My head knows what we’re about to do is wrong, but apparently my vagina didn’t get that memo.

‘Do you even realise how sexy you are?’ he whispers as his hand finds its way between my legs again.

‘Mmmm,’ I moan into the palm of his hand, my body trembling with anticipation.

‘I’ll remove my hand if you promise to be quiet. Okay?’

I nod. I still can’t believe we’re going to do this.

‘Place your hands on the mirror,’ he demands. I do exactly as he asks. It’s ironic how I’ve hated being controlled my entire life, yet I have no qualms about following his orders. The way Brock takes control is sexy.

He rubs his cock between my legs as I push my hips towards him. I’m no longer concerned about what we’re doing. I want to feel him inside me.

I bite down on my lip when he slides inside me, trying hard not to make a noise.
‘Christ you feel amazing,’ he breathes as he pulls out slightly before pushing all the way back in.
‘Oh god.’ One of his hands grasps my hip, holding me in place, while the other tugs on my hair, tilting my head back so his mouth can cover mine.

‘I said no noise.’

My eyes roll back in my head as he deepens the kiss before picking up the pace. He slams into me in short, hard strokes. It feels incredible. The risk of the sales assistant discovering us only seems to heighten the experience.

It doesn’t take long for him to have me on the edge. ‘I’m … I’m,’ is all I get to say before we’re interrupted.

‘Is everything all right in there?’ I hear the skanky sales assistant ask. Shit. There’s no holding back. I’m coming whether I like it or not.
‘Ahh,’ I moan into Brock’s mouth as my body starts to shudder and my orgasm hits me full force. His hand quickly moves from my hip, snaking around my waist, using his strength to hold me up. When he pulls out of the kiss, I see a smile tug at his lips as his eyes lock with mine in the mirror.

‘We’re fine,’ he says in a breathless tone that has him sounding like he’s just run a damn marathon.

I see his eyes clench shut as his movements become more desperate. I can feel my vagina still pulsing around him and I know he’s about to come as well. Shit, could his timing be any worse?

My Review:
This is not the book I was expecting at all and it was a very pleasant surprise! This book, unlike any other book, left me completely satisfied (no pun intended). Everything came to a close and was answered. I always wonder about certain things that happen but this book gave you a few months jumps at the end so we could see what was going on in 6 months. I didn’t feel like I was sad after this book was over because the ending was just perfect!
I thought Jade was an amazing person. For all the hardships she faced in life she wasn’t cold or bitter. She seemed to just take one day at a time. Her positive attitude is one thing that really made the book and I wouldn’t have blamed her for a “poor me” type attitude. M was the PERFECT villain. She was quietly vicious. This was my first book by JL Perry and I’d definitely read another if this is what they’re like!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
