BLURB

Willow Taylor lives in a castle with large walls and iron fences. But this is no ordinary castle. It’s called Heartstone Psychiatric hospital and it houses forty other patients. It has nurses with mean faces and techs with permanent frowns.
It has a man, as well. A man who is cold and distant. Whose voice drips with authority. And whose piercing gray eyes hide secrets, and maybe linger on her face a second too long.
Willow isn’t supposed to look deep into those eyes. She isn’t supposed to try to read his tightly leashed emotions. And neither is she supposed to touch herself at night, imagining his powerful voice and that cold but beautiful face.
No, Willow Taylor shouldn’t be attracted to Simon Blackwood, at all.
Because she’s a patient and he’s her doctor. Her psychiatrist.
The medicine man.

WARNING: This book discusses sensitive issues including but not limited to, depression and suicide.

Excerpt

“I… Can I go now?” I whisper.
He bends toward me. Not like he did yesterday when he was all shaken up and furious. This leaning is slow and filled with a different kind of intensity.
“No.”
I swallow, looking into his eyes, which have moved down to my lips. Has he ever looked at my mouth before? I can’t remember. He’s always been so professional and distant that just one look of his seems exaggerated, almost too much to handle.
“W-why not?”
“Because I’m curious about something.”
I lick my lower lip. I swear it’s not meant to be provocative. It’s just that his stare is making them tingle and dry out. I didn’t know that a body part could be shy until this man focused on it like this.
“About what?”
Again, I’m expecting one thing but something entirely different happens. Instead of answering with his words, he touches me. Of his own volition.
His hands wrap around my neck, his fingers spanning the entire length of my throat, tilting my face up. My eyes are wide; I can feel it. I can feel them popping out. I can feel my heart popping out too, bursting with too many beats.
He’s touching me.
Touching. The litmus test of attraction.
“I’m curious about,” he whispers, his breath wafting over my nose, drugging my senses. “Why the fuck do I want to kiss you?”
“What?”
My hands reach up and hold his wrists. I feel like my world just went unsteady and I can’t stand up straight without his help.
Did he just… Did he say he wants to kiss me?
There’s a slight frown on his forehead, as if he’s genuinely perplexed. As if I’m a riddle and so is his desire to kiss me.
“It doesn’t make sense.” His gray, almost black, gaze flicks back and forth. “You’re my patient. You’re my responsibility. I’m supposed to fix you, not think about your lips. I’m not supposed to think about your mouth or the taste of your tongue. If you really taste like you smell.”
“How… How do I smell?”
His chuckle is short and harsh as he moves his hand and grabs my face. “Like lemons. Like you’ve been sucking on lemon wedges all day long with that pink mouth of yours.”
I feel the heat of his hand on my flesh. He’s burning up, slowly boiling over. “I-I… It’s the lime jello,” I reply, as if that’s the most important thing in the world right now. Explaining the source of my smell and possibly my taste too.
“You’re not my type,” he growls, pushing his forehead against mine.
“I’m sorry?”
“You’re young. You’re reckless. Inexperienced. You believe in happy endings, don’t you? Fairy tales and fucking magic.”
His breaths are wild, frustrated. Like believing in good things is a bad habit. Believing in something bigger than you is silly.
I frown, pressing harder against his forehead. “Of course I do. If someone like me doesn’t believe in magic, then there’s no hope for anyone else. There’s no hope for me. And it’s not a bad thing, you know. It’s not a bad thing to believe in something. In fact, it shows that you’re brave and –”
His mouth pulls into a humorless smile. “And you don’t know when to shut the fuck up.”
“Hey –”
“Willow.”
He flattens my cheeks with his hands, asserting all his stupid authority over me. Too bad it only makes me hornier and I have to clench my thighs against the shivers running through my lower body.
“What?” I somehow manage to squeak.
“Shut the fuck up.”
I gasp; how dare he?
But it gets swallowed up by his mouth.

Excerpt:

That does it for me.
The idea that someone is hurting her causes a rage I’ve only ever felt once before in my life to flow through my entire body. I clench my fists and decide now is the moment I confront her. Is there another asshole bothering her now? Did her douchebag ex make an appearance? I will fucking end whoever did this to her. I know without asking that Jake would have my back on that move. I’d be willing to bet money Ron would as well. It takes every ounce of strength I have, but I wait until the night is a little closer to being over before snatching her arm and pulling her through the doorway into the dark kitchen. I spin her around to the wall beside the doorway, leaning down so we’re face to face, eye to eye.
“You’re gonna tell me what the fuck is going on, and you’re gonna tell me right the fuck now. Is someone hurting you? Why are your knuckles all bruised? You been fighting?” I fire off everything at once, realizing I sound like a nagging girlfriend, but I need to know she’s okay. I NEED to get this off my chest.
Bree sighs deeply, her warm breath fanning across my neck, making me aware of our proximity. I have her pinned to the wall, my left hand is still gripping her shoulder, and my right hand is on the wall above her head. I’m being a bastard, and using my size to cage her in. I watch her closely for signs of fear, but she almost looks bored, and mostly just annoyed. I know she can still refuse to answer, but I’ll be damned if she gets away from me until I have my say.
She raises her eyes to give me an angry glare and I feel my dick twitch. Seeing fire in her eyes as opposed to the sadness they always carry makes her ten times hotter. Fuck, I’m an asshole. Something is seriously wrong with her, and I’m standing here getting turned on.
“I’ve just had a lot on my mind. I’ve been…training. You know exercising and punching a bag. That’s why my knuckles are bruised.” She raises an eyebrow at me, daring me to question her more. I smirk down at her…she has no idea who she’s messing with.
“You need to wear gloves then. You’re going to ruin your beautiful hands. You’re not actually sparring are you? ”I ask, my voice deeper than I intended. I’ve never been this close to her before, and my dick is currently trying to punch its way out of my zipper to reach her.
She glances down, and I have a moment of horror when I realize there is no way she’s going to miss my erection. I’m a healthy boy, and my jeans were already on the tight side. Her breath hitches, and she jerks her eyes back up to meet mine.
When I see the heat in her eyes, I swear I almost come in my pants like a teenager. Bree is fucking turned on by me. I can work with this. Letting go of her shoulder, I put my hand on the wall, completely closing her in, and lower my head towards hers.
“I don’t fool around with Ron’s guys,” she says softly, making no move to avoid my quickly approaching lips.
“Good thing I’m not one then,” I say, my mouth forming a smirk. I’m now so close to her lips I can feel their warmth on my own.
“YO BREE, where ya at?” I hear Jake yell from outside the door. His voice is like a splash of cold water, causing me to jerk back, and the moment is gone.
“My brother is an asshole,” I grumble, lowering my hands to adjust my erection, and backing further away from her.
“Your brother just stopped me from making a stupid mistake,” she says, before walking out of the door.

MY REVIEW

S. Ferguson gives us a beautiful debut story.
I would have never known this was a debut novel.
Ferguson tells a wonderful story of Bree finding strength after
a life of people beating her down.

Declan is the most perfect guy! I've never really swooned over a book guy before
but he was just…. Perfection! He knew just what to do for Bree to help her
but to let her keep herself and to grow. The main thing I loved about this book
is that it isn't just a love story, it's a book about finding yourself again
or even just finding yourself to begin with.

This book has triggers and I can tell you from experience that S. Ferguson gets those thoughts in your head perfectly. She has this perfect way of knowing just what people would think and feel in those positions! Bree has always felt like she isn't good enough for anyone and she ruins everything. I could relate so closely to her.

I think my favorite quote out of the whole book was from Ze.
I think this is a quote I am going to hang on to.

When Ze said:
“You’re the designer of your own catastrophe.”

I loved, LOVED, the ending of this book…
well I loved the whole book but the ending made me extremely happy!
I can not wait for the next book in this series… I have questions
and I'm hoping they get answered in the next upcoming book.
I also am hoping to continue to get snippets of Bree & Declan through other books. No one deserves a happy ending like Bree does!

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I will leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

Tracing Holland By Alyson Santos

Tracing Holland

By Alyson Santos

Night Shifts Black (Book 2)

Released: September 12, 2016

BLURB

Callie asked if I was ready. And that’s the question, isn’t it? Ready for what? The  spotlight? The music? Or ready for life. Ready to face the reality that what I was is going to attack the very fabric of who I am now. No one knows I’m a different person. Well, no one except the two most important people in my life, which is why there’s a remote chance I might actually pull off the comeback I never saw coming.

Then again, that was before Holland Drake crashed into my life. I didn’t ask for her. Heaven knows she didn’t ask for me. But sometimes it’s not about what makes sense; it’s about accepting that not everything will. It’s learning you have a choice when it feels like you don’t. It’s believing even the worst past can still have a future.

And sometimes it’s none of that. Sometimes it’s survival. A blind fight through the pain as you cling to any shred of hope you can find. And it’s those moments, those desperate pleas into the darkness for a flicker of light, when you have no choice but to confront the blessing that often feels like a curse:

You’re still alive. You’re still significant.

You’re once again Luke Craven, frontman for Night Shifts Black.

**This novel is a work of fiction and intended for mature readers. Events and persons depicted are of a fictional nature and use language, make choices, and face situations inappropriate for younger readers. Please note this book also addresses the issues of depression and suicide in a compassionate, realistic manner.

MY REVIEW

Tracing Holland is Book 2 of Night Shifts Black. These books are amazing. Tracing Holland is utterly amazing since you get to step into Luke’s mind. There were so many people upset with the first book NSB and Casey coming into the scene. I think you need to think about depression though. Someone depressed can’t go falling in love while being depressed...they don’t have that  mental health going on. Love is much more than lust.

I think Santos took these books on the perfect path. The readers learn about depression and what loved ones go through trying to love them. But the bond that was formed in the first book just continues to grow in the second.

When Luke visited Casey’s family and the ‘scene’ unfolded just pissed me off!!! I was mad for several reasons...for him being abandoned by his friends and for people to think this scene was acceptable. I was just floored. I also just adored Holland...she was exactly what Luke needed in this story, she believed in him and never questioned him.

My favorite quote from this book was from Luke, when he said: “I can hide in plain sight better than any person on this planet.” This is a sentence that explains depression so much! Not only do they feel invisible but they want it, they thrive in it!! But it really puts it in perspective how depression messes with you!!

I also loved Jesse being added to the story and how Luke saw himself in him. I think Jesse made him want to be better and do better. There was just so much growth in this book. It was heartwarming. I gotta add ...Oh my goodness…these guys on the tour! Pulling pranks….I just adore them! They were so funny!!!

I received an ARC of this book for in exchange for an honest review.
