The Moth and the Flame, the second romantic standalone in the When Rivals Play series by B.B. Reid.

THE FLAME
Here lies Louchana Valentine. She was a homeless, orphaned virgin.
I never cared what my gravestone would say until I landed in deep with a powerful gangster. Lucky for me, my best friend happens to be ruthless too. I should feel guilty that he’s forced to turn on the man who’s been a father to him. Except I’ve always known that Wren’s soul wasn’t as black as he claimed.
He was good.
He was beautiful.
He was mine.
He just didn’t know it yet.
And with Wren keeping me safe, I’ve got time left to rewrite the end of my story. But if he has his way, virgin is already carved in stone.

THE MOTH
I’ve never known anyone as alluring as Lou. Or as frustrating. Since the night she saved my life and stole my wallet for her troubles, I couldn’t stay away.
She became my onus.
My light.
My…anyway.
With nowhere to run, I’m forced to trust someone I never expected. At least with Lou safe in Blackwood Keep—far away from me—I’ll die with my conscience intact. Because she no longer looks at me with friendship in her eyes. Those iridescent blues shine with a different need entirely, and I’ve never been able to deny her.

It is strongly advised that you read The Peer and the Puppet before diving into The Moth and the Flame. Content suitable for ages 18+.

The When Rivals Play second book, The Moth to the Flame, is probably my favorite book written by BB Reid and I was seriously obsessed with The Peer and the Puppet. So what am I suppose to call my obsession with Lou and Wren? I really have no idea but I loved this story! BB Reid told one heck of a friends to lovers story.

Lou is a character that just isn't safe around females with a pulse. He may be some type of thug doing all these illegal activities and be a total jerk most of the time to others. But give him the other half to his heart and he turns into this sweet guy who wants his woman to be happy. I was enamored, no... smitten with Lou and the complete package! Wren is perfectly a teenager and I really appreciate that. So many YA books have teens acting as though they're adults so I appreciate these characters acting true to age.

I enjoyed this story so very much. I knew Wren and Lou were going to be a deliciously slow burn romance... they were. They were combustible and once they combined, I thought we'd all burn with the electricity coming off them. Besides the characters, that I just love, this storyline I'd do good and connected to the first book. I felt so much tension and could not get enough! I love the way BB Reid writes her stories. I was so invested in this story, my heart was right there with them. One of the best books I've read so far... worth way more than the 5 stars I gave.

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

Excerpt:

Lou didn’t awaken when I climbed through her window, weary and angry, late the following night. My prediction had come true. I’d gone back to Blackwood Keep, and against my better judgment, I confronted Danny Boy.

Or rather Ever McNamara.

Heir to a multibillion-dollar hotel empire.

And the only son of Thomas McNamara.

Surprisingly, what bothered me most wasn’t Danny Boy or his double life. Something about his father had seemed familiar to me. As if I’d known him in another lifetime.

I shook my head as I toed off the black and white striped Adidas Lou had picked out, swearing the sneakers almost made me look normal. I snorted, and with a moan, she shifted in her sleep causing the sheet covering her lower half to slip dangerously low. Before I could rethink it, I ran my fingers over the curve of her naked hip now bare to me. Thoughts of Ever McNamara fled to the recesses of my mind as I marveled at the smoothness of her skin.

It was a surprising contrast to her hardened demeanor, but I always knew it was a front. She was a pillar, no doubt standing tall and appearing strong, but one day, her cracked foundation would crumble, and I’d make damn sure I was around to pick up the pieces.

Even if she didn’t want me to be.

There were times when she didn’t appreciate just how seriously I took my role as her best friend. She claimed I acted like her father rather than her friend. If that was what she called making sure no one ever hurt her again, then sure—I’d daddy the fuck out of her.

Another moan slipped from her lips when my fingers reach the edge of her frilly blue panties, but this time, it was the sound of my name on her lips. For a second, I panicked, thinking she’d caught me perving on her, but when her even breaths continued, I realized she was still very much out of it, and a smile slowly formed as my fingers dipped lower.

“What are you dreaming right now, Lou?”

Her breath seemed to catch as I continued to toy with the seam of her panties.

“Are you dreaming of me?”

She sighed in response.

“You are, aren’t you?”

A low whine escaped her.

“I know what you’re after, little Valentine. I’ve known all along.” We both seemed to stop breathing when my fingers dipped beneath her panties and I felt her smooth skin. “How can you be sure you can handle me when I haven’t even kissed you yet?” I swallowed, cursing myself but then decided to allow myself honesty. At least this once.

She was writhing now, attempting to relieve the ache I knew was building, but we both knew it was useless. Nothing short of getting me inside her would ever do.

“You want to come.” It wasn’t a question but a statement of fact. “But you don’t get to come. You’ve been bad, Lou. This is how I’ll punish you.” I freed my fingers from her panties and stepped back. As if I’d snapped my fingers, breaking her from my spell, she jackknifed from the bed, breathing hard and looking around in confusion. When her gaze pierced the dark and found me, I remain perfectly still, my hands already in my pockets, pretending my fingers weren’t burning with the memory of her soft skin.

“Wren?”

My eyebrow rose. “You expecting someone else?”

THE PUPPET

Borrow the bike. Win the race. Collect the cash. It should've been an easy job. Ran out of town with a broken leg and a lawsuit, my mother's latest flame swoops in like a knight in gilded armor. Blackwood Keep is a place I don't belong, and I'm not the only one who knows. To the boy across the hall, my savior's only son, I'm a stray looking for a bone.

He's lord of the manor.
King of the academy.
And number one on my shit list.

THE PEER

I have no intentions of becoming a happy family with the social climber and her wild daughter. A bottle of Jameson and a cracked skull gets my problem shipped to reform school, but I didn't bank on her returning.

Four's out to get even, and she almost had the perfect plan: expose the privileged kid moonlighting as a gangbanger. She's smart, but she'll have to be smarter. Sending her away won't be good enough this time. I'm going to have to tame the little troublemaker. To the girl across the hall, the one without a name, I'm nothing without my silver spoon.

She's lady of the trailer park.
Queen of the swamps.
And my new favorite pastime.

The romance can be read as a standalone, however, the series is one story. The plot introduced in The Peer and the Puppet will continue in the following novels. Content suitable for 18+.

Throw every pre-conceived notion or judgmental thoughts about stereotypes out the window. This book is oh so different, oh so special. We get people in The Peer and the Puppet. Real people with unique and personal opinions... and I love it! It pulled me if from that first chapter!! I do wish the characters had been in their early 20s instead of teens. So many situations seemed a bit off for teenagers to go through and I always have an issue with the lack of parental involvement.

There is quite a bit of teenage angst and rebellion in Four. I had to remind myself several times that she was only 16. At other times it was extremely obvious that she was a teenager and not the 20 year old she acted like some times. Maybe I’m too far removed from my teenage years now to remember the ups and downs of the maturity level. Ever seemed to mostly act like those alpha jerks a lot of romance readers love.

I can feel myself getting whiplash with all the mood swings in this book! I didn’t even recognize who Ever was during Four’s Birthday. He was almost a sweet teenage boyfriend. Ever is the most confusing guy I’ve ever read about. I know we get his viewpoints but I’m dying to know what’s really going on in his mind... perhaps I’m just dying for the entire story and not these tasty little nuggets!

I was worried this set up was going to be similar to Keiran from Fear Me. He was so hard to like... so hard and I’m not sure I ever succeeded in liking him or even rooting for him. He did not have many redeeming qualities. But Ever is not like him. Yes, he can be hard. Yes, he’s a jerk. But there’s more to Ever. And we see him do things for Four that would make any teenager girl fall. I’m so thankful that there’s a softness to him... I need that in my male characters. I love to swoon!

Ok, I talked a lot about the characters... sorry, they were deep and I felt like a teenager when writing my review... I was so up and so down! B.B. Reid really created a coming of age story that’s gripping and captivating. Reid’s writing is so descriptive. While The Peer and the Puppet has a conclusion, a satisfiable ending, there are still many unanswered questions especially about Ever’s side work. I’m invested in these people now, and while I might have wanted Four and Ever’s besties story next, I’m hopeful that more of Exiled’s story will unfold.

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

EXCERPT

THE PUPPET

I was having a dream. A very good dream. A dream I’d never in a million years admit to having under any circumstances. Not even torture.
Sadly, my dream ended, and I was jarred awake drenched in sweat. The T-shirt I’d worn to bed was bunched around my waist, showing off my cotton panties. I blushed when I recalled in vivid detail what caused such disarray.
And then I froze when I realized I wasn’t alone.
A quick glance at the foot of my bed showed a figure in dark clothing leaning forward with his forearms casually resting on his knees. The scream that tore from my lips was silenced when the figure leaned over and calmly rested his palm over my mouth.
“My father is a light sleeper,” Ever calmly warned. “And I’m sure you don’t want to explain to your mom why I’m in your bedroom at three in the morning.” My heart continued to race even after he lifted his hand, but I didn’t scream. “Good girl.”
“Why are you here?” I hissed while scrambling to pull down the T-shirt still bunched around my waist. I lifted the comforter I must have kicked away in my sleep and covered my lower half.
Oh, God, he’d seen everything. I felt like I had been caught red-handed considering he’d been the one I’d—
Fuck my life.
“You told my father I went to the store for deodorant.”
“And?” I sounded as exasperated as I felt.
“He didn’t buy your story.”
I could imagine considering he was sitting in my room fully dressed at three in the morning. It didn’t take seven hours to buy deodorant.
“Not. My. Problem.”
“But it is. We made this deal together, and we’ll honor it…together.”
I sighed. “So, what did he do to your highness? Take a spoon?” I mocked.
“Grounded,” he grunted.
“Poor you.”
I didn’t expect his smile. It was soft. Indulging. My overly large T-shirt had slipped from my shoulder, so he trailed his finger over my skin. “I’ll have to punish you, Four.”
“Punish me?” That was laughable. “I’m not your child.”
“No, swamp girl. You’re a puppet. My puppet.” He stood from my bed and headed for the door. “If I’m grounded, so are you.”
I told myself I was still dreaming and that he wasn’t actually saying these words. “What does that even mean?”
“It means I’ll have fun anyway.”
Too exhausted to argue, I sighed and met his gaze. “Get out of my room, McNamara.” I thought there was nothing else he could say or do until his parting words.
“You sound lovely when you come, Archer.”
