It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents’ house. Under the sweat and dirt, Manning Sutter was as handsome as the sun was bright. He was older, darker, experienced. I wore a smiley-face t-shirt and had never even been kissed. Yet we saw something in each other that would link us in ways that couldn’t be broken...no matter how hard we tried.
I loved Manning before I knew the meaning of the word. I was too young, he said. I would wait. Through all the carefully-chosen words hiding what we knew to be true, through his struggle to keep me innocent, and through infinitely-starry nights—I would wait. But I’d learn that life isn’t always fair. That no matter how much you achieve, none of it matters if you suffer the heartbreak that comes with falling for someone you can never have. Because even though I saw Manning first, that didn’t matter. My older sister saw him next.
Author Bio
Jessica Hawkins grew up between the purple mountains and under the endless sun of Palm Springs, California. She studied international business at Arizona State University and has also lived in Costa Rica and New York City. To her, the most intriguing fiction is forbidden, and that's what you'll find in her stories. Currently, she resides wherever her head lands, which is often the unexpected (but warm) keyboard of her trusty MacBook.

This book brings you right back to the
age of 16! It brings you back to the time when you were so obsessed with…
school until you saw that first boy/man to make your heart trip. Plus… the 90s!
Ha! Those were my teen years too! What a hoot they were… the overwhelming boy
bands were everywhere!!
Jessica Hawkins has flawless writing as
usual. Her words just paint this visual story so you can see it all. I don’t
like retelling the synopsis in my review so I just want to say a few things. If
you’ve read Jessica’s books previously, you’ll know she likes to write about
taboo topics. She likes to write about the things we think and no happen but
don’t really acknowledge happening. This is what I, personally, LOVE about her
writing!
I tore through this book once I was
able to start. The cover pulled me in… this girl is just so pretty! You can
feel the attraction between Manning and Lake immediately! But I loved that
Manning was a good guy… he didn’t throw himself on the young naive girl. The
friendship they start to build is beautiful! It’s just this steady, slow burn
that pulls at all the right parts in your heart!
I kind of wish I would have waited to
read this because I am going to go insane until May! I cried and sobbed and
might have cussed Jessica a bit (sorry girl) but I could so relate to Lake. This
book is just the start of a three book series. So it doesn’t stop at a place
that makes you all warm and fuzzy. You’re gonna feel a little twitchy over the
next few months but it isn’t a horrible cliffy with Lake standing over Tiffany
with a dripping, bloody knife… nothing like that!
I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I will leave an Unbiased
Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my
opinions are just that... my opinions.
