An unbidden laugh slipped out of me, and she softened at the sound. Her eyes traced the lines of my face with an unfamiliar emotion behind them. It was a sort of fondness, an admiration.

“I love it when you laugh. You never laugh. Or smile. Has anyone ever told you you have nice teeth?”

“Wouldn’t you know—that’s the first thing anyone says about me,” I teased.

With a laugh of her own, she tried to bump me with her hip, but because she was drunk, she just sort of fell right into me. For the second time in ten minutes, Olivia’s body was flush against mine.

But this time it wasn’t just the sweet scent of her that I noticed. It was the length of her dark lashes, the endless depth of her eyes. It was that smart little nose and the valley that connected it to her lips. Those lips were full and wide, with a bow so deep and sharp, it looked like it’d been carved there by a sculptor. I could have counted the smattering of freckles on her cheeks or the creases in those plump, rosy lips, which parted just a little. Just enough for me to capture one if I tried.

Blurb

Olivia Brent has one summer to save the dairy farm she just inherited.

But there’s one problem, and it’s not her lactose intolerance.

Jake Milovic.

The brooding farmhand has inherited exactly fifty percent of Brent Farm, and he’s so convinced the city girl can’t work the land, he bets she can’t save it in a summer.

Determined to prove him wrong, Olivia accepts what might be the dumbest wager of her life.

His strategy to win seems simple: follow her around, shirtlessly distracting her between bouts of relentless taunting. And it’s effective—if his dark eyes and rare smiles aren’t enough to sidetrack her, the sweaty, rolling topography of the manbeast’s body would do the trick.

What they don’t know: they’ll have to weather more than each other.

Mysterious circumstances throw the farm into disarray, and with the dairy farm in danger, Olivia and Jake have to work together. But when they do, there’s more to fear than either of them imagined.

Because now their hearts are on the line, and the farm won’t be the only casualty if they fail.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

The Romantic Pact that I didn't realize was coming. Woops, I almost finished my review without talking about the heat level. It would have been a travesty if I accidentally skipped that. Havel and Crew were like lava... leaving everything scorched in their wake! They were definitely wiggle-worthy listening material!

The narrators really brought a pulse to Hazel and Crew. Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro had their work cut out for them. I mean, the emotions and antics in this story have a wide range and they just poured everything into the book. The way both Paige and Navarro were able to portray their grief and struggling to heel was beautiful and might have had me wiping my eyes several times. But they also showed a playfulness that you could hear in their voices. There was a fondness that the characters felt for each other that I felt in the narration as well as the words in the story. This is my favorite type of audiobook... where it's felt in the emotions of the narrators and the words of the story. I don't think anything could have made this better in my opinion... a full 5 stars from me!

Blurb:

A new standalone romance from USA Today bestselling author Meghan Quinn and narrated by Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro...

I haven't seen her in three years. I haven't talked to her since the kiss. So why am I on a plane, flying across the world to spend a week with her in Germany? One word: Pops. My life’s a mess. My possible football career is hanging on by a thread. I'm driving the roads of Germany in honor of Pops with the one girl I can never have. And I’m sharing a bed with her, the girl I've measured everyone else up to, while desperately trying to not to touch her. We made a pact growing up, never to get romantic with each other - never fall in love. And I'm about to break that pact. For good.

Review for The Boy Next Door by Sierra Hill

I really wasn’t sure if Jordan was going to be a redeemable guy. I’m not a fan of bully romances, like at all. But The Boy Next Door is more like an enemies to lovers romance than bullies. Yes, Jordan was a jerk. He wasn’t a nice guy during his teenage years and he was too into not putting himself out there to avoid being hurt by Amelia. I think he knew that Amelia was the end all and he just wasn’t ready… not many people are ready to end their dating experiences at nearly the first one. So yeah, I liked this one. I felt like Jordan was able to show why he acted as he did. He’s really a sweet and wholesome guy.

“When it comes to you, Lia, you’ve always made me stupid. Stupid for leaving you. Stupid for the things I said and did. And stupid now, to think I’m good enough for you.”

With a guy saying things like that, how can you not be lost?!?! And let’s be real, Amelia wasn’t an angel. They both made mistakes. They just needed to know if they were worth risking it all for something more… for something that could be wonderful. Sierra Hill is the queen of sweet and swoon. My heart was lost to this cast of characters. I had an inkling that some of the characters that were mentioned were from some of the other books in this series. This didn’t ruin any of the other books but was used to connect them, I’m sure.

I’ve struggled reading actual books over the last few months. Audiobooks I’m flying through but actually reading means I need to sit still and empty my mind for the story. This might be my third or fourth book in the last 4 months, everything else has been audio. Miss Hill was able pull me in quickly and keep me hooked… believe me, that is no easy feat as of late.

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

REVIEW: Before She Disappeared by Lisa Gardner

Before She Disappeared

by Lisa Gardner

Mystery, Thriller & Suspense
Released on 1/19/21

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner, a propulsive thriller featuring an ordinary woman who will stop at nothing to find the missing people that the rest of the world has forgotten

Frankie Elkin is an average middle-aged woman, a recovering alcoholic with more regrets than belongings. But she spends her life doing what no one else will--searching for missing people the world has stopped looking for. When the police have given up, when the public no longer remembers, when the media has never paid attention, Frankie starts looking.

A new case brings her to Mattapan, a Boston neighborhood with a rough reputation. She is searching for Angelique Badeau, a Haitian teenager who vanished from her high school months earlier. Resistance from the Boston PD and the victim's wary family tells Frankie she's on her own--and she soon learns she's asking questions someone doesn't want answered. But Frankie will stop at nothing to discover the truth, even if it means the next person to go missing could be her.

My Audiobook Review:

I have been a huge fan of Lisa Gardner for years now… possibly even a decade. I have eagerly awaited her DD Warren and Quincy’s books over time. I was really excited to see her releasing a standalone story. I found Frankie to be a great lead. I was rooting for her to unravel everything, if not to find them, then for her own piece of mind. Something to quite those dreams and nerves. I really, like really, appreciated that Gardner didn’t just make her independently wealthy for to make things easier. She gives us a broke heroine that doesn’t have her life together at all. It’s refreshing to that instead of doing what could make the story easier. I applaud her for taking a harder road there.

I found myself quickly immersed in the story of the missing girl(s). I’m used to putting the story together piece by piece and I usually have most of it together by halfway through. That didn’t happen with Before She Disappeared. I felt like I was missing so much until that last like 8%. Then I had most of it together but still not all of it. Lardner much have put this story together piece by piece because it was layered like a complex puzzle. I can’t thank her enough for working my mind and stretching my imagination! I know this is supposed to be a standalone but I wouldn’t mind learning more about Frankie and all the secondary characters. It feels like they all have some skeletons in their closets.

Hillary Huber was amazing as the narrator for this entire book. She did change her voice, she did other languages, she did accents. Amazing in my opinion. I felt she sounded authentic and I was pleasantly surprised when she was really able to step into the characters shoes and just portray them. I looked her up, she wasn’t a name I clearly recognized but she seemed kind of familiar. Sure enough, I’ve listened to several audiobooks she’s narrated. I’d happily listen to another audiobook narrated by Miss Huber.

Thank you Brilliance Publishing for the complimentary copy of this audiobook with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Steele by Sawyer Bennett

Steele by Sawyer Bennett

(Arizona Vengeance, Book #9)
Release Date: December 8, 2020

A second chance may be just what James Steele needs…

I might be one of the older players on the Arizona Vengeance, but I like to think that also makes me one of the wisest. Or at least I used to.

Turns out, I’ve been a bit selfish. I’ve been married to hockey and my team for years, which hasn’t left much time for my actual wife, Ella. Now I’m juggling a separation I never wanted, the pressure of being a single dad to our teenage daughter, and the career I sacrificed it all for.

While my game on the ice might be on fire, the game in my personal life is clearly lacking, as evidenced by the fact I just saw my wife on a date with another man. If I have any hope of saving the family I love, I need to re-prioritize, and fast. So it’s time for me to get back to fundamentals, just like I did when I learned how to play hockey. I’ve never backed down from a challenge, and romancing my wife is a challenge I am very much looking forward to.

Time to put on my game face, because I’m in it to win it.

Audible (narrated by Brian Pallino and Jill Redfield)

Sawyer Bennett’s Steel was just amazing! This was a truly unique storyline, one that you don’t see very often. Actually, I can’t recall if I’ve read something similar. That in itself is a difficult feat. In every marriage, spouses make mistakes, we are just people after all. Jim is no different. He’s made so many that his wife actually separated. Ella has been playing second fiddle to hockey for way too long. She’s ready to be someone’s number one. It takes this move from Ella for him to see what has been there this entire time. Jim is determined to win back his wife’s heart and he puts it all out there. I love how he accepted everything he did or didn’t do. He’s determined to change and do better. He’s putting forth the effort but is it a little too late for Ella?

Brian Pallino has been a huge favorite in all narrators, male or female. He just has this voice that works for me. He brings out the emotions to words and gives I all. Pallino brings out the heart that Jim is openly giving to Ella. He’s in this relationship and you can feel the desperation he has to keep this relationship.  I wasn’t certain but I went and look, I hadn’t listened to Jill Redfield narrate previously. That isn’t to say she hasn’t narrated other books, she most definitely has, but they aren’t the types of books I generally listen too. However, she was on par with Brian Pallino. She brought Ella and all her confliction to life. She was really uncertain and hurt. Redfield did a fabulous job.
