REVIEW: Recipe for Love by Anne Malcom

Recipe for Love by Anne Malcom

Contemporary Romance

Release Date: December 27, 2020

Blurb:

Nora Henderson is of the opinion that chocolate cures almost everything.
Which, among a few other reasons, is why she opened her bakery in the small town of Jupiter, Maine five years ago.
People come from miles for her chocolate peanut butter cupcakes. Customers almost come to blows over the last almond croissant. Some even say her chocolate chip cookies help ease the burn of heartbreak.
Nora’s life is good. On the surface, at least.
Underneath the frosting and the sweet décor of her bakery is a broken engagement, doubt and anxiety spirals.

In short, Nora Henderson is a mess.

Not someone Rowan Derrick would ever be interested in. He’s the gruff veteran who owns a construction company, who broods his way around town and can wear the crap out of a backward baseball cap.
He stars in almost every one of her fantasies. She expected him to stay there, to remain her imaginary boyfriend and customer … nothing else.

But Rowan Derrick has had his eye on Nora for a while. Little does she know, she stars in every one of his fantasies too. And now that the beautiful baker is no longer engaged, he’s going to make her his.

My Review:

It's been quite a while since I've actually read a book. Sure, I've listened to hundreds of audiobooks this year but reading an actual book hasn't happened in a long time, especially romance books. Who knew it would be an insta-love romance from Anne Malcom? Who knew it would be a light romance from Anne Malcom? I never saw this coming! Recipe for Love is sugary sweet! Nora is a baker, a baker that struggles with pretty severe anxiety. She's recently broken off her engagement from a guy she settled for. Nora is finally realizing she deserves more. Rowan is partial owner of his construction company with Kip, his best friend. The group of characters in this story are amazing! Fiona, Kip, Tina, even glimpses of Lori and Finn, plus Rowan's family. Anyways, Rowan is all over Nora from the get-go. They seem to have an immediate connection and an immediate sexual attraction.

I was beyond thrilled to read Malcom's acknowledgements and see that she's writing Kip and Fiona's story now. Plus we'll be getting several other books from Jupiter... I'm ecstatic to hear that! I think what I loved the most from Recipe for Love is that while it's sugary sweet, it's more than that too. It's definitely not as dark or as hard as most of Malcom's books. There is some traumatic events tied to military life, there's mental health struggles, loss and grief, and addiction. There's also a nice balance with humor and fun, with steamy, hot scenes and even some fun banter. There's truly something that every romance reader is going to love with this story. Malcom's writing captivated me and I just fell into this story. I'm eagerly awaiting book two in this series!

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

After a bad breakup, Nola wants nothing to do with Christmas, especially in her quaint hometown of Bright Harbor, Maine. Infuriatingly charming and cheery, Nola’s surroundings only worsen her sour mood.

To make matters worse, Caleb, the boy who broke her heart years ago, is all grown up and still living in town. While doing her best to avoid him, Nola bumps into the local mailman, who gives her a mysterious letter. And when she finds that the writer is a fellow Scrooge, she can’t help but feel her spirit lifting.

Nola writes back to her new pen pal—who, unbeknownst to Nola, is none other than Caleb. When Caleb gets a response hand delivered by the mailman, he’s intrigued by the mystery sender. A friendly correspondence develops—and quickly turns flirtatious.

Although Nola and Caleb claim they can’t stand each other, they can’t deny the simmering attraction that brought them together in the first place.

Can these nameless pen pals write their own love story—or will they be too caught up with the ghosts of their Christmases past to find a future together?

About UNTYING THE KNOT:

A spin-off from the #1 Amazon bestsellers, A Not So Meet Cute and So Not Meant To Be, USA Today bestselling author Meghan Quinn brings you a heart-warming, yet hilarious full-length novel on what life is like after the happily ever after.

Ryot Bisley is my husband.

Yes, the former third baseman for the Chicago Bobbies and absolute heart throb of the Windy City. That Ryot Bisley.

The first time I ran into him, he was grumpy, a horrific host, and left me on his sofa with nothing but a nylon baseball flag to use as a blanket.

The second time, he reluctantly bought me dinner, stared at my chest the entire night, and still sported that permanent frown.

The third time . . . well, that was a game changer. His smile captured me, his teasing charmed me, and his touches excited me.

So when he was called up to the majors that didn’t stop us from knocking it out of the park and all the way down the aisle.

Eleven years later…I’d love to say we’re happy as ever but the man who sent me dirty text messages every day is long gone and Mr. Frowny Face is back.

He’s so focused on trying to build a life after baseball that he doesn’t see the life we’ve already created together. . .so I make the hard decision and serve him divorce papers.

Problem is…my husband refuses to accept those papers. Instead, he has a new game plan that makes untying the knot of our marriage a little tricky. And just when I thought I wanted to be traded . . . he's slowly, tantalizingly roping me back in.

Wow, I haven’t had such an emotional story hit me in a while. Untying the Knot by Meghan Quinn is a beautiful story with her humor and quick-wit still laced throughout an emotionally uplifting story. It definitely plays with your heart strings more than most of her romantic comedies do. I love the dual POV and the only way to read this book is to listen to the audio version. They duet performance is magically but I’ll get to that below. I also really liked the past and present storyline. We get to really learn about the characters and how their relationship developed. We don’t often get books about second chance marriages. I adored Ryot and how he wouldn’t give up on Myla and what they had/have. I do have to admit that Myla got on my nerves a bit. She was so quick to jump-ship without even talking to her husband. It bothered me but we do learn that it is how Myla is as a character, she runs.

Now, the narration by Jason Clarke and Stella Hunter was perfection. These two are fabulous separately but together, together they make magic. The duet narration is one of the best things about listening to this audiobook. Clarke was the most perfect Ryot. He was strong and loving. He was a fierce man that loved hard and showed it. Hunter was great too. I thought she played Myla flawlessly. Does she come off a little whiney? Yes, but Myla is a bit of a whiney character. Sometimes people are just that way. Does that make them a bad person? No. Does that make them annoying? Yes, occasionally. So, I see what a lot of people are saying in their reviews but I feel like all people are different because of their upbringings. Quinn just gives us a unique person with unique characteristics.
