Blurb

0.5 in The Kiss of Death Series. Prequel novella to Kill Me.

At thirteen years old I was sold, doomed to become a sex slave.

Nicholai Ivanov, boss of the Russian Bratva, gave me the ultimate gift. He saved me from a fate worse than death. He promised to make me strong, because only the strong survive, and the weak die, forgotten and inconsequential.

I now live in a world of blood and violence, where humanity itself is a weakness. My life is not a battle of bad and good, but bad and worse. This is kill or be killed, survival of the fittest.

Make me or break me?

MY REVIEW

Make Me gives us a look into the making of Una. We get a small peek at the pain that formed Una into the woman/hired killer that she is today. This gives us a cold but captivating look at a brutal past that Una  not only endured but survived in at such a young age. While most 15 year olds are going to the mall and begging their parents for money and the keys to the car, Una is killing men, or women, whoever she’s told or paid to kill.

While this is a novella, it doesn’t FEEL like one. There is so much intensity in these pages, so much heartache for such a young girl. She was pulled from a horrible life in an orphanage where she was neglected and nearly starved. Her saving grace was having her sister, Ana, with her. Una looked out for her and Ana loved her in return. But like everything in Una’s life, it wouldn’t stick around.

Nicholai had her trained into the fierce killer she is today.  We got to see her relationship with Nicholai but, also, her relationships grow with the boys she trained with, and eventually fell for. Getting to see the relationship between Una and Alex was mournfully,  beautiful, maybe since I knew the outcome.  Besides Ana, Alex was the only true feeling of love that Una has ever experienced. Una seems to carry the pain of losing her friend around with her and it affects her now in how she lives her life now that she is able to be “free.”

So like others have said, this is listed as prequel at 0.5, I would read it as it was released. I think just going by content of the books. I just liked reading and knowing things, I think I was able to handle the brutalness that is Make Me, a bit better.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
